Year 5 Curriculum

In Year 5 children are challenged to apply their skills more independently. They are encouraged to take more responsibility for their behaviour, organisation and learning in preparation for Year 6 and Secondary School.

Children continue to work on story structures by learning stories with increasingly complex sentence structures and adventurous vocabulary. They continue to develop as fluent and thoughtful readers, using skills of inference and deduction with a range of texts. Finally, children continue to apply and use their phonics to spell and read words with multiple syllables.

Children begin to use their multiplication, addition and subtractions facts to help them with more complex written methods. They begin to apply their calculation skills to a variety of problems. They investigate practically with money, measures, shape and data. Children are also encouraged to become independent problem solving by applying a range of strategies to solve a problem.

In year 5, we aim to give children opportunities to develop their investigation skills. They study the following topics:

  • Separating Mixtures
  • Light

Children develop a range of skills through the following topics and stories:

  • Dathliadau (Anrheg i Aled)
  • Gwyliau George
