Year 6 Curriculum

In Year 6 children are challenged to apply their skills more independently. They are encouraged to take responsibility for their behaviour, organisation and learning in preparation for Secondary School.

Children continue to develop their extended writing by studying texts with increasingly complex sentence structures and adventurous vocabulary. They continue to develop as fluent and thoughtful readers, using skills of inference and deduction with a range of texts.

Children begin to use their multiplication, addition and subtractions facts to help them with more complex written methods. They begin to apply their calculation skills to a variety of problems. They investigate practically with money, measures, shape and data. Children are also encouraged to become independent problem solvers with the ability to use a range of strategies independently.

In year 6, we aim to give children opportunities to develop their investigation skills. They study the following topics:

  • Changes
  • Forces
  • Healthy Bodies
  • Materials
  • Animals and Plants
  • Transition Unit for Secondary School

Children develop a range of skills through various topics and stories. These topics allow children to practice their conversational skills, as well as giving an opinion. They get chances to explore, enjoy and read poems. They also have the chance to develop listening skills.
