Meet The Team

Welcome to Dosbarth Maple's class page. In Dosbarth Maple, Miss Parry is our class Teacher and we have Mrs Lewis as our class Teaching Assistant, along with Mrs Gauterin who works with the three year 3/4 classes. We are very lucky to have Miss Jones who will be teaching Forest School on Monday afternoons, providing the pupils with fantastic opportunities for learning outside the classroom.

Here on our class page you will find all of the important documents you need and take a look at our learning in action.

General Information

Forest School: Dosbarth Maple will have Forest School every Wednesday morning with Miss Jones. Children will need their Forest School kit every Wednesday. Children will need need warm outdoor clothes and shoes that they don't mind getting wet and muddy.

Book bags: The children will be expected to return their book bags to school every Friday so reading books can be changed regularly. It would be really helpful if you could write a little note each week in their reading record to let us know how they've got on.

PE: For Su Term 1, Dosbarth Maple will have PE every Tuesday morning, 10:45 - 11;45. Children will need their PE every Tuesday. Children will need black joggers or shorts, a plain white top and plain black trainers or pumps. Please make sure your child's PE is clearly labelled.

Summer 2 - How Things Work

Topic: This half term we will be focussing on becoming Engineers and investigating how things work. We will start off with paper bridge construction, moving onto investigating magnets and electricity before finally finishing with forces. Each focus will start with a 'BIG QUESTION' and lead into an experiment. Stay tuned on Twitter and Seesaw to find out what we get up to.

PE: This half term we will be focussing on preparation for Sports Day.

English: Our text focus  for Talk for Writing will be writing a set of instructions, based on our topic of 'How Things Work'. Our model text is a set of instructions on 'How to Make a Lava Lamp' which the children will get to do before then moving onto creating their own experiment and writing instructions on it.

Maths: We will be learning about fractions, time, shape and position direction and movement to finish off the year.

ICT: We are focussing on coding. We are going to refine our debugging skills and create our own algorithms in the process.

Summer 1 - Oh The Places You'll Go

This term we are going to focusing on Fairytales and trying to expose the children to as many fairytales as possible throughout our short term.

In Literacy, we will be looking at an adapted version of Hansel and Gretel with a focus on speech.  Children will be writing their own stories with speech as a focus using Hansel and Gretel as a guide.

In Maths, we will be finishing off perimeter before moving on to our money topic.

In Topic, we will continue our focus of fairytales but we will find out we have been recruited as 'Fairytale Fixers'.  Each fortnight we will be given a problem from a well known fairytale and we will have to work together to find a solution to the problem. We will have to use team work in some cases and be able to take feedback on board with some of our designs to improve them.

In Welsh, we will be working on character descriptions and being able to describe ourselves.

Swimming: we will have swimming every Thursday morning at Water World from 10:45 - 11:15.

Spring 2 - Let's Natural World

Topic: This half term we will be focusing on the Natural World and specifically on the Rainforests of the World. We will learn to locate places on a map, understand the layers of the rainforests and look at the animals that live there and their life cycles. We will then move onto looking at people of the rainforest and the affect that people have such as deforestation.

PE: This half term we will ne doing dance linked to the Rainforest. PE will take place on a Tuesday morning, before lunch.

English: We will start our learning with a book study on 'The Great Kapok Tree'. We will then focus on our text for Talk for Writing which will be an non-chronological report. We will be focusing on writing our own reports on Rainforest Animals using the model to support. We are also going to be visiting the library this term on a Thursday morning.

Maths: We will be continuing with multiplication and division and then ending this half term with perimeter and length.

Spring 1 - Let's Celebrate!

Topic: This half term we will be focusing on the word Cynefin and what that means to us. We will be looking at what Wales has to offer and the amazing opportunities on our doorstep. We will be using Mantle of the Expert technique to draw the children into the Topic and allow them to become travel experts. They will use this knowledge to create a tour of Wales for the Chinese Dragon ahead of Chinese New Year.

PE: This half term we will be doing circuit training. We will focus on endurance, balance, perseverance and teamwork. The children will have the opportunity to come up with their own circuit at the end of the topic.

English: Our text for Talk for Writing will be an adaption of the legend 'The Sword in the Stone'. We will be focusing on writing journey stories and being able to plan our own stories using this model.

Maths: We will be focusing on addition and subtraction before moving onto multiplication. We will also be looking at map skills and using grid references.

Autumn 2 - Let's Celebrate!

Topic: This half term we will be focusing on celebrations around the World. We are going to be looking at a few a bit more closely and they are: Diwali, the Hindu festival of life; Eid al-Fitr, the Islam festival commemorating the end of Ramadan and Christmas, the Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus.

PE: We will be picking up where we left off last half term and continuing with Gymnastics.

Maths: Addition and Subtraction is our main focus this half term, with a little bit of temperature and measuring thrown into the mix!

English: Our text for Talk for Writing will be an adaption of the story 'The Snowman' by Raymond Briggs. We will be focusing on descriptive writing and creating our own characters.

Autumn 1 - Reach for the Stars!

For the first three weeks of the term, we will be getting to know the children, giving them the opportunity to learn about their friends and themselves, as well as establishing our rules and routines in class. The children will think about their goals and aspirations and learn about using a 'growth mindset' to help them with their learning.

For the remainder of this half term our topic will be 'Inspirational People'. We will be using pupil voice to find out exactly what the children want to learn about. We will look at creating autobiographies, like so many inspirational people have done around the world. In Welsh, we will be asking questions to understand basic information about each other and developing our conversational skills. Our PE focus will be on Gymnastics, primarily on movement. In Maths, Place Value is a main focus so any types of number games you can play at home with your children would be very beneficial.

Homework

Here you will find our Homework grids which will usually be posted every second Friday of a fresh half term. There are 6 activities in total all differentiated so please choose which activities you think are most appropriate for your child and complete at least 3. You can submit Homework via Seesaw, Twitter or bring it into school. All children should be able to upload to Seesaw from home but if you have any trouble with this, contact the class teacher via Seesaw. We expect the children to be sending home via their own accounts and not through parent's messages as it encourages independence and ICT skills.
